Henry Day was born in Dalham (Newmarket Q1-1882 3B:536), baptised 26th February 1882, son of Nathan and Jane DAY (née COPPIN?).
1891 census...Aged 9, he was at The Alley, The Sounds, Dalham with his father Nathan DAY [50] farm labourer born Lidgate; his mother Jane [50] born Depden; sister Harriett [28] born Lidgate and brother Frederick [13] farm labourer, born Dalham. 1901 census...Aged 19, still at the Alley, a horse keeper, with his widower father (now horse keeper)l brother James [42] bricklayer born Lidgate and his wife Emma [49] born Dalham. There was a boarder, George ASHMAN,[39] a bricklayer's labourer born Ashley. His mother had died in 1899. 1911 census...Aged 29, a farm labourer, he was in Dalham lodging with Alfred and Kate KEMP and their family. His father was living in Dalham with Henry's brother James and his wife Emma. |

He enlisted in Dalham. The battalion were near Fricourt but as Henry died of his wounds and his Army records have not been found, there is no knowing where or when he was wounded. There were only one or two deaths in the battalion that week. Corbie, where Henry is buried was a medical centre, with Nos 5 and 21 Casualty Clearing Stations based at La Neuville (the suburb to the NW, across the Ancre)
